Premiere: Dylan Weschler "Twenty Nine" Music Video

Sunroom Studios is over the mooooon to share a new music video for our good friend and musical icon Dylan Weschler’s ambient piece “Twenty Nine”.

I (Jake) have been experimenting with cameraless animation directly on Super8 film in recent months. Dylan has been doing some experimenting of his own, crafting amazing ambient soundscapes using tape loops and other exploratory recording techniques. I feel quite lucky to be able to contribute this video to accompany my favorite track from his new EP "After Ideas, Vol. 1". Please enjoy the video and read a note from Dylan below :)

After spending the majority of 2020 feeling uninspired to write songs or guitar riffs, I began relying more so on musical routines and sound design explorations. I would mostly experiment with tape loops, field recordings and different synth patches on my Korg Volca FM mini-synth. I'd record whatever I was doing and come back to it a few days later. After a few weeks of doing this, I realized that I was crafting somewhat of a cohesive musical piece. I wouldn't necessarily classify it as an "album" or the pieces that make up the EP as "songs," but more so as a collection of experiments. I also noticed that making music like this was relaxing both during creation and while listening back to it--I would put the rough mixes on my headphones while doing yoga in the morning.

One of my favorite pieces on the EP is called "Twenty Nine". I made it on August 29th of this year. After mixing it for a week or so, I sent it to one of my heroes Jake Stolz. He had recently made an incredible video for a new song our band Varsity had just put out and I felt like "Twenty Nine" would be complemented very nicely by a video in the same style. He absolutely delivered and I feel very grateful for his time, patience and craft. Jake and I typically work on our art together in the same room at the same time with opportunities for live feedback and interaction. That is obviously not the way it happened this time, but nonetheless I think the time in between communication and the breaths we allowed this collaboration to take ultimately benefited the final product. Very excited for the world to see it now.

Creating music and art like this felt, in a way, a bit freeing to me and is still a habit I am in now. I plan to release several more volumes in this style of music in the near future and I am very pleased to have received such a warm and positive response from the folks who've listened. - Dylan Weschler
