Silhouettes 006: "Crimson Burning Bright" by Dogs at Large

When Sunroom asked me to do the “Silhouettes” series, I sifted through a bunch of old demos dating back to 2015 or so, looking for something to submit. While I liked some of them, I decided it would be more fun to write and record a completely new song instead. This song was written and recorded in my (very modest) home studio in about an hour on Saturday, October 10, 2020. The lyrics had something to do with the pre-election Fall 2020 political tension and were kind of grasping for optimism amid a time of despair. I recorded the song on my Tascam 8-track tape machine, starting with acoustic guitar and overdubbing everything else on top of that. I had pretty much no outboard gear at the time except for a tiny Donner reverb pedal that I attached to one of the effects sends. It’s a fun and simple type of workflow and I’m excited to release something with this sound because most of my music starts this way and sketches like this are then fleshed out into something bigger later on. I actually re-recorded this song a few weeks after this version was made, with drums and a bit cleaner production, and that version is on our December 2020 release My Epiphone.
